Marvel Movies & TV Shows to Watch Before Avengers: Doomsday & Secret Wars

CONTAINS SPOILERS

Sam Wilson and Yelena Belova walk into the X-Mansion with Reed Richards, and suddenly a Marvel rewatch sounds like fun again. The scene brings the MCU into the same room as Earth-828’s Fantastic Four and the returning X-Men. Before Avengers: Doomsday arrives, start with the Avengers films, both seasons of Loki, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and the original X-Men movies. Then follow the television stories and movie branches connected to the characters you care about most. Doomsday opens in December 2026, so there is time to work through it without rushing.

Marvel’s Official Doomsday Watchlist

X2: X-Men United (2003) Movie Poster
Marvel has already made a useful first cut. The Countdown to Avengers: Doomsday collection on Disney+ contains 15 projects. It starts with X-Men and X2, then ends with Thunderbolts* and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The middle favors the Avengers’ biggest turning points and Loki‘s complete television story. Recent movies open the doors between universes. It is a rewatch shelf for fans who remember how the main characters reached those moments.

That selection reveals what Marvel wants fresh in our minds. The old Avengers provide the emotional foundation, and Loki supplies the Time Variance Authority. The Fantastic Four have their own Earth. The original X-Men cast has a history outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Recent films introduce most of the heroes shown in the Doomsday trailer.

A newcomer faces a harder start. The jump from The Avengers to Infinity War skips the team’s breakup in Age of Ultron and Civil War. One Captain America origin cannot explain everything Steve Rogers means to Tony Stark. Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson inherit other parts of Steve’s life. Even the X-Men branch stops before The Last Stand introduces Kelsey Grammer’s Beast and Days of Future Past repairs a timeline full of dead heroes.

Television exposes the bigger gap because Loki is the sole show in the collection. Several current Doomsday characters spent hours changing on Disney+, including Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes. John Walker disgraces the shield in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier before becoming U.S. Agent. Hawkeye gives Yelena Belova the truth about Natasha’s death. These stories explain why Sam and Walker distrust each other and why Yelena can speak about Natasha without blaming Clint Barton.

We would use Marvel’s collection as the base and add only the stories that deepen a person or relationship. That keeps the rewatch manageable and gives television the room it deserves. Marvel is placing several screen histories in one event. Recognizing the people inside those histories will make their first conversations mean more.

The Avengers Movies Before Doomsday

The Avengers (2012) Movie Poster

The original Avengers matter to Doomsday because Endgame closes their version of the team. The Avengers captures the first uneasy day Steve Rogers and Tony Stark work together. Their irritation becomes respect during the Battle of New York, and that respect makes every later disagreement personal. The movie also establishes Thor as a hero divided between Earth and Asgard. Natasha becomes the person who can read the room before its most powerful people understand what is happening.

Age of Ultron is worth adding for the party at Avengers Tower alone. The team jokes about lifting Thor’s hammer and behaves, briefly, like people who choose to spend time together. Ultron grows from Tony’s fear and destroys that ease. A new roster is left to continue. Captain America: Civil War completes the fracture as Steve protects Bucky and Tony discovers the truth about his parents. The shield ends up on the floor between them. Doomsday brings Steve and Bucky back into a story where Robert Downey Jr. now plays Victor von Doom, with Thor also returning. Marvel has confirmed Doom’s identity and kept the meaning of his familiar face secret.

Infinity War shows the cost of the breakup. Tony fights in space and Steve operates underground, so the Avengers face Thanos on different battlefields. Endgame earns its scale by bringing the survivors back to the same problem. Their time heist revisits New York and Asgard before the battlefield where Clint loses Natasha. Tony’s snap saves everyone in front of him and leaves the team to continue under other leaders. Sam receives Steve’s shield, and Thor leaves with grief that no victory has erased.

For the strongest Avengers route, watch the four Avengers movies and place Civil War between Age of Ultron and Infinity War. A shorter refresh can begin with The Avengers and move to Infinity War and Endgame. Captain America: The First Avenger adds Steve and Peggy Carter, who are both confirmed to return. Thor: Ragnarok strips away Thor’s hammer and his father in a single film. The destruction of Asgard then forces him to lead the survivors himself.

Avengers Endgame: Encore and How It Connects to Doomsday

Avengers: Endgame (2019) Movie Poster

Marvel is putting Endgame back in theaters on September 25, 2026, under the title Avengers Endgame: Encore. The special presentation includes an exclusive look at Avengers: Doomsday. Audiences in IMAX and Infinity Vision-certified theaters will receive an additional sneak peek. That gives the rerelease a job beyond recreating opening weekend with a packed crowd. Encore brings us back to the last Avengers ending weeks before Marvel shows us what the next one is up against.

Endgame is also where several Doomsday stories begin. Steve places the shield in Sam’s hands, setting up the Captain America who now wants to assemble his own team. Thor leaves Earth after losing his family and his home. The 2012 time-heist detour lets Loki escape with the Tesseract, creating the variant who eventually keeps Marvel’s branching timelines alive. Those consequences now belong to Doomsday, which brings Sam and Thor back alongside Steve and Loki.

Tony Stark’s death creates the Encore’s sharpest connection. Robert Downey returns as Victor von Doom, and Marvel has revealed no reason Doom resembles the hero who saved the universe. Endgame gives that face its full emotional meaning because Steve fought beside Tony for years. Thor watched him make the final sacrifice. Scott Lang helped build the plan that put Tony in position to use the Stones. Doomsday can turn one of Marvel’s most reassuring faces into a threat, and Encore reminds us why that will hurt before the mystery offers an explanation.

See Encore if you want the big-screen return or the new Doomsday material. A standard Endgame rewatch still supplies the essential character history. Neither version replaces the stories made after 2019. Loki continues the branch created during the time heist. Brave New World follows Sam into the Captain America role, and Thunderbolts* establishes the other team using the Avengers name. The September 25 return is the cleanest handoff from the Avengers who won the last war to the people who have to survive the next one.

Sam Wilson and the New Avengers

Captain America: Brave New World (2025) Movie Poster

Endgame closes with Steve giving Sam the shield. Sam’s first response is uncertainty, and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier lets that uncertainty occupy real space. He meets Isaiah Bradley and sees what the symbol means to people excluded from its promise. John Walker later turns the shield into a public weapon. When Sam finally appears in a new suit and claims the name Captain America, the decision belongs to him. Brave New World tests Sam’s judgment and empathy. It also tests his courage to challenge more powerful people.

Bucky shares that television story and begins it trying to make amends from a notebook full of names. His friendship with Sam is argumentative and funny, with the occasional exhaustion of people who know exactly how to irritate each other. By Thunderbolts*, Bucky has entered public life and ends up among people harmed by government programs. He recognizes pieces of his own recovery in Yelena and Walker. The state also used Ghost. Bucky’s patience with the group comes from years spent deciding who he wants to be after the Winter Soldier.

John Walker benefits from the show even more. His defining image comes from a crowded square in Latvia, where blood remains on the shield as phones record him. Brave New World and Thunderbolts* identify him as a former Captain America. The series shows the public killing that Sam remembers whenever Walker enters the room.

Yelena’s route begins with Black Widow. Natasha is her older sister, and Alexei is the needy father figure from a childhood built on a lie. At the family dinner, Yelena asks the others to acknowledge that the only childhood she remembers was real to her. Hawkeye picks her up in New York, where she plans to kill Clint Barton for Natasha’s death. Their conversation at the Rockefeller Center rink ends that mission. Yelena finally accepts that Natasha chose to save Clint.

Thunderbolts* brings these damaged lives together and lets their worst instincts show before the team name arrives. Yelena and Bucky meet Bob inside a death chamber. Walker arrives with Alexei, and Ghost completes the trapped group. Their escape requires trust from people trained to expect betrayal. The climax turns Bob’s depression into the Void, a dark interior world where each teammate has to reach him as a person. The escape depends on talking Bob down, which shows how this group responds when power alone cannot solve the crisis.

The ending gives them the New Avengers name through Valentina’s public maneuvering. Sam Wilson has his own Avengers claim, and the Doomsday material puts both groups in the same conflict. Brave New World shows Sam trying to rebuild a public institution. Thunderbolts* shows Valentina putting a marketable name on a group she once intended to erase. Their argument over the word Avengers begins long before they enter the same room.

Marvel TV Shows Before Doomsday

Why Loki Matters Before Doomsday

Loki Season 1 (2021) Poster

Loki Season 1 begins inside Endgame when the 2012 Loki escapes with the Tesseract and is taken into Time Variance Authority custody. The show strips away his place in Asgard, then introduces variants whose lives are erased when they leave an approved path. Its retro offices make cosmic control look like paperwork, right down to the ticket dispenser and the desk drawer full of Infinity Stones. That joke tells us how far outside ordinary Marvel power the agency operates.

The first season also gives the multiverse a moral conflict. The Time Variance Authority has protected one timeline by destroying every branch. Sylvie kills He Who Remains and releases those branches, leaving Loki in an agency he no longer recognizes. Loki Season 2 follows the consequences. Timelines multiply beyond the Temporal Loom’s capacity, and people begin to disappear into strands. Loki learns to control his movement through time.

Loki destroys the Loom and gathers the dying timelines in his hands. The branches turn green as he gives them life, and then he takes his place alone at their center. The character who once wanted a throne accepts one that isolates him from everyone he loves. Current Doomsday material brings back Loki and the Time Variance Authority.

Which Marvel TV Shows Are Optional

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021) Poster

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier follows Sam and Bucky through John Walker’s fall. Hawkeye continues Yelena’s story after Black Widow. WandaVision introduces adult Monica Rambeau and gives her powers as she pushes through Wanda’s Hex. Ms. Marvel introduces Kamala Khan, whose enthusiasm for Captain Marvel becomes a real partnership in The Marvels. Monica and Kamala have no confirmed Doomsday roles, so these shows serve viewers who want their complete character histories.

VisionQuest arrives on October 14, 2026, two months before Doomsday. Marvel has described it as the final chapter of the television trilogy that began with WandaVision and continued through Agatha All Along. Paul Bettany returns as Vision, with James Spader back as Ultron, though neither has a confirmed Doomsday role. The release timing makes the series a sensible autumn watch for anyone following what became of Wanda’s recreated family.

Agatha All Along belongs before VisionQuest for viewers following the entire trilogy. What If…? visits universes where familiar choices produce different heroes. Neither series has a confirmed role in the announced Doomsday story or cast. Choose Agatha for the Westview characters and choose the animated series for its imaginative variants. They are bonuses for interested viewers, free from any promise of required plot information.

Fantastic Four and Doctor Doom

The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025) Movie Poster

The Fantastic Four: First Steps has the strongest confirmed link to Doomsday. It introduces Reed and Sue Richards as the center of a family on Earth-828. Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm share their retro-futurist world and their home. The film’s best domestic moments happen in the Baxter Building kitchen and living room, where a cosmic crisis competes for attention with a baby and a marriage. Ben has his own place at the table, complete with an affection for the school’s headteacher, Lynne Nichols.

That domestic life is exactly what Doomsday can threaten. Kevin Feige has said First Steps directly leads into the Avengers film, and the Baxter Building sets were designed for both productions. Reed will enter the larger story as a brilliant man whose calculations have immediate consequences for his wife and child. Sue can steady a room and protect it. First Steps makes those qualities visible before the family has to negotiate with heroes from another Earth.

You can skip the 2005 Fantastic Four movies and the 2015 reboot for continuity. Their families do not come from Earth-828, and their versions of Doom are unrelated to Robert Downey Jr.’s Victor von Doom. Those films remain available as franchise history. They cannot explain the relationships that First Steps establishes in one focused movie.

Disney identifies Robert Downey Jr.’s character as Victor von Doom. Marvel has not announced a Tony Stark variant or explained why Doom has Tony’s face. We should take the name seriously until the film provides another answer. First Steps introduces the Reed side of the rivalry. The Avengers films explain what Downey’s face means to heroes who watched Tony die.

The 2015 Secret Wars comic makes Reed and Doom the central intellectual conflict after the multiverse collapses, though the Doomsday screenplay remains unannounced. First Steps shows the household that gives Reed something to lose.

X-Men Movies Before Doomsday

The returning X-Men arrive with their own friendships and grudges, stretching back to a movie released eight years before the MCU began. Patrick Stewart’s Xavier and Ian McKellen’s Magneto have spent that history arguing over a future shared by humans and mutants. James Marsden’s Cyclops has led Xavier’s field team. Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique chose Magneto’s side. The other confirmed returnees enter at different points, so a useful X-Men rewatch has to do more than refresh some familiar faces.

Core X-Men Movies Before Doomsday

X-Men (2000) Movie Poster

Start with X-Men from 2000. Logan and Rogue enter Xavier’s school as outsiders and discover a community hidden inside a mansion. Xavier sees coexistence as a difficult goal worth pursuing. Magneto plans to force mutation on world leaders. Their long friendship survives their opposing conclusions, and that affection gives every confrontation a personal ache. Cyclops emerges as a capable leader whose reserve makes more sense once Logan starts needling him.

X2 gives this cast its strongest ensemble story. Alan Cumming’s Nightcrawler opens the film by attacking the White House under mind control, and his teleportation looks dangerous today. William Stryker later invades the school and uses Xavier as a weapon against mutants everywhere. Magneto helps stop the attack, then redirects the weapon toward humans. The alliance lasts exactly as long as their survival requires. Doomsday puts the same two men in front of a threat to their entire universe.

The Last Stand belongs on the list for two practical reasons. Kelsey Grammer arrives as Beast, and the story apparently kills Cyclops and Xavier during the conflict over Jean Grey. Days of Future Past returns to a future devastated by Sentinels, then sends Wolverine to 1973 to prevent it. The closing scene brings him back to Xavier’s school. Cyclops and Jean are alive, with Xavier once again in his office. The Fox timeline remains tangled. More important, this group has already lived through the destruction and restoration of its own future.

Our core route begins with X-Men and X2. Complete it with The Last Stand and Days of Future Past. The first pair establishes the people and their beliefs. The second pair explains Beast’s presence and the restored team. Four films give the X-Mansion scene in Doomsday a real past, including the knowledge that the school has been attacked before and rebuilt.

Optional X-Men and Deadpool Movies

Logan (2017) Movie Poster

First Class makes Days of Future Past richer by introducing the younger Xavier and Magneto. Their early friendship begins with shared purpose and ends on a beach in Cuba, where Erik turns away from Charles. The later time-travel story asks those younger men to help save the future versions we know. Add it when the Xavier and Magneto relationship is the part of X-Men history you most want to understand.

Logan offers a devastating later chapter for Xavier and Wolverine. Hugh Jackman is absent from the announced Doomsday cast, so the film has no confirmed assignment in the 2026 story. Deadpool & Wolverine makes Logan’s death part of Wade Wilson’s universe’s decline. Watching Logan first makes Wade’s reckless attempt to replace him sadder and more selfish.

Deadpool & Wolverine brings this older movie history into Marvel’s current multiverse. Wade meets the Time Variance Authority and enters the Void, where characters from earlier Marvel film continuities have been stranded. Channing Tatum’s Gambit is among them, and he is the Gambit confirmed for Doomsday. The movie establishes that a character can return with memories from a screen world that existed outside the MCU.

Deadpool and Deadpool 2 provide Wade’s complete branch, starting with his relationship with Vanessa. X-Men ’97 is an excellent optional refresher for the team’s family dynamic, with no Doomsday connection announced for its animated continuity. Choose these extras for the characters themselves, then bring the four-film core route back to the X-Mansion.

Marvel Multiverse Movies Before Doomsday

Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) Movie Poster

Peter Parker has recently lost Aunt May when two men who share his name step through portals in No Way Home. Each one understands his grief because their earlier movies remain part of their memories. The X-Mansion meeting in Doomsday has similar potential. Heroes from different movie histories can understand one another through the people they lost and the homes they are trying to protect.

An incursion occurs when boundaries between universes erode. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness shows that one reality can destroy the other during the collision. The movie also includes a Professor X variant played by Patrick Stewart, giving the MCU its first live-action encounter with that familiar face. Doomsday’s official synopsis promises a collision involving three universes.

Deadpool & Wolverine shows how the Time Variance Authority responds to a dying universe. One official tries to speed up its destruction with the Time Ripper. Wade and Logan end up inside the Void themselves, among the people and objects pruned from timelines the agency has already closed.

Monica Rambeau wakes in an unfamiliar hospital room after sealing a tear between realities in The Marvels. Kelsey Grammer’s Beast is beside her, along with a version of Monica’s mother who became Binary. We would watch the film because its last scene places an MCU hero inside an apparent X-Men reality, though Monica is missing from the current Doomsday cast announcement.

Months before Doomsday, Spider-Man: Brand New Day introduces another apparent multiverse disturbance in its post-credit material, though Marvel has not confirmed where that final scene leads. Tom Holland is absent from the announced Doomsday cast, and the title is absent from Disney+’s countdown, so the ending may be waiting for another Spider-Man story. Watch it if you are following Peter’s current story.

Peter enters the multiverse through grief, and Monica enters it by becoming stranded far from home. Loki keeps the branching timelines alive as Deadpool finds abandoned heroes in the Void. Multiverse of Madness shows that a collision can destroy a reality. Doomsday puts all four of those arrivals inside one collision.

More Confirmed Heroes Before Doomsday

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) Movie Poster

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever carries Shuri and M’Baku into their current roles and gives Namor his first appearance. Shuri becomes Black Panther after losing T’Challa and her mother. M’Baku moves from challenger to trusted leader. Namor protects Talokan with a willingness to attack first. His uneasy truce with Wakanda leaves room for cooperation during a larger threat.

Current Doomsday material places Wakandan fighters beside members of the New Avengers. Wakanda Forever tells us who has authority now and why Namor’s alliance can never be assumed. The film also gives Shuri a grief story that connects her to other survivors in the incoming cast, including Thor and Yelena.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings introduces Simu Liu’s confirmed returning hero. Its bus fight and scaffolding sequence show his control before the finale expands into family mythology. The post-credit scene leaves the Ten Rings sending an unknown signal that Marvel has never tied to Doomsday. Watch this one for Shang-Chi himself and treat the rings as an open thread.

Scott Lang and Cassie are both confirmed for Doomsday. The first Ant-Man gives their bond its emotional center, and Endgame makes Scott’s return from quantum space central to the time heist. Quantumania updates Cassie as a young activist with her own suit, making it an optional watch for their current partnership. Marvel left the film off its official collection. Its Kang story belongs to an earlier Avengers plan, and Doom is now the announced villain.

What to Watch Before Secret Wars

The most useful Secret Wars preparation is the relationship between Reed Richards and Victor von Doom. First Steps introduces the version of Reed who will meet Doom in the current films. Avengers: Doomsday will reveal what Doom wants and which worlds survive the first collision. That makes the 2026 movie the first required title for any Secret Wars rewatch.

Marvel’s two major Secret Wars comics offer different versions of the event. The 1984 series transports heroes and villains to Battleworld, where the Beyonder promises to grant their desires after a cosmic contest. Doom steals the Beyonder’s power. The 2015 series begins after the final incursion destroys the remaining universes. Its Battleworld is a patchwork of surviving places ruled by Doom.

In the 2015 story, Reed challenges Doom over who gets to save a multiverse and what kind of world follows. Loki‘s living timelines echo part of that cosmic setup. Multiverse of Madness has already introduced incursions, and the Time Variance Authority can observe damaged timelines. Marvel has already used these ideas on screen, even with the Secret Wars plot and its full cast still unannounced.

Secret Wars arrives on December 17, 2027, one year after Doomsday. Releases during that year can change the recommended viewing. For now, know the family Reed is trying to save and the Avengers history attached to Doom’s face. The 2015 comic is a strong optional read for anyone curious about the source of Battleworld and the Reed-Doom conflict.

Build Your Marvel Watchlist

Thunderbolts* (2025) Movie Poster

Begin with what you have forgotten. Someone who remembers the Infinity Saga can spend more time with the X-Men and current teams. A viewer who watched every Disney+ show may need First Steps and the Fox films. Newcomers deserve a fuller Avengers foundation before they jump into Endgame, and the extra team films provide it.

  • For the full field guide, watch the four Avengers movies and Civil War, then both Loki seasons. Continue with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier beside Black Widow. Hawkeye comes next. Brave New World and Thunderbolts* update the teams. Add First Steps and the four-film X-Men route, then finish the multiverse branch. Wakanda Forever and Shang-Chi complete the current cast paths.
  • For a post-Endgame return, begin with Loki. Follow it with No Way Home and Multiverse of Madness, then watch Brave New World beside Thunderbolts*. First Steps and Deadpool & Wolverine introduce the other film worlds that join the conflict.
  • For an X-Men newcomer, watch X-Men and X2. The Last Stand and Days of Future Past complete the original-cast route. Deadpool & Wolverine connects the Fox films to Marvel’s current multiverse. The Marvels adds the unresolved Beast and Monica scene.
  • For a television-focused route, watch both Loki seasons first. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier supplies Sam and Bucky, then introduces Walker’s fall. Hawkeye supplies Yelena’s next chapter after her childhood with Natasha in Black Widow. WandaVision and Ms. Marvel lead toward The Marvels. VisionQuest will complete its own television trilogy shortly before Doomsday reaches theaters.

A busy week can begin with Endgame and both Loki seasons. Multiverse of Madness explains the danger to colliding realities. Thunderbolts* provides the current team, and First Steps introduces Earth-828. Finish with Deadpool & Wolverine because it connects the Time Variance Authority to the older Marvel movies. Add the longer character branches whenever one of those introductions leaves you wanting more.

Avengers crossovers become memorable when a meeting changes how we see people we already know. In Doomsday, Sam Wilson enters a room with the New Avengers. Reed Richards arrives from another Earth, and the original X-Men return to a fight that threatens their school again. Knowing why Sam distrusts Walker and why Magneto still listens to Xavier will turn that X-Mansion meeting into several stories colliding at once.
