Must-Watch Movies You Can Stream at Home Right Away

CONTAINS SPOILERS

Every movie on this list survives a second viewing, which is the only test of cinema that has really held up since Roger Ebert proposed it for his Great Movies project before his death in 2013. We mixed genres and decades on purpose: a 1994 American prison drama sits next to a Korean class satire, an Australian chase film, a Hong Kong mood piece, and a hand-drawn Japanese animation, because no algorithm is going to serve up that range on its own. Streaming has never taken up more of our viewing time than it does right now, Nielsen’s The Gauge put it at over 40% of US television usage in June 2024, then at 47.5% by December 2025, and the libraries behind that number have never been bigger. What’s gotten smaller, oddly, is how satisfied most people feel with what they land on. These nine films are our answer to that problem.

The Case for a Short List

Recommendation engines are built to reduce variance, not expand taste. They keep you from bailing on a session by steering you toward whatever sits closest to your past behavior, which means they succeed by quietly ruling out everything that doesn’t. The practical result is a catalog of 80,000 titles that most people experience as a corridor of about 40. A short list assembled from outside your own history is one way to walk back out of that corridor.

Ebert’s test for the Great Movies project was simple and durable: a film qualifies if it keeps working on repeat viewings the way Hitchcock’s films kept working on audiences decades after they were made. That criterion quietly disqualifies anything that depends on novelty or a first-watch twist. The nine picks below pass it, and they do it across different genres, different decades, and four different languages.

Modern American Films That Repay a Second Viewing

These three are recent enough that they shaped what American cinema looks like in the 2020s, and old enough now to be considered on the second-viewing terms Ebert proposed.

Parasite (2019)

The Park family leaves for a camping trip, the Kim family begins a leisurely takeover of the empty mansion, and then the doorbell rings. The arrival of the former housekeeper in the rain is the hinge that flips the film from heist comedy to home invasion to tragedy. Bong Joon-ho storyboarded every frame himself, a habit since his student years, and his production designer Lee Ha-jun built the modernist mansion as a full-scale set on a Jeonju backlot so the camera could move through windows and across levels without a cut. Parasite was the first non-English-language film ever to win Best Picture, taking four Oscars from six nominations at the 92nd Academy Awards in February 2020. The New York Times polled more than 500 directors, actors and industry figures in June 2025 for its 21st-century top 10, and Parasite finished first. Rotten Tomatoes has it at 99% from critics. It is the best opening pick for a household that has not made the Korean-cinema turn yet.

Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)

The maximalism is the point. Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert built the film on a budget reported between $14 million and $25 million, with a visual-effects team of fewer than 10 people, several of whom had no prior background and were friends of the directors. The picture grossed roughly $143 million worldwide, making it A24’s highest-grossing release at the time, and won seven Oscars from 11 nominations at the 95th Academy Awards in March 2023. Michelle Yeoh became the first Asian woman to win Best Actress. The film’s centre of gravity is not the googly-eyed rocks or the hot-dog fingers, even though those scenes are quoted most. It is the moment in the laundromat parking lot when Evelyn tells her daughter that despite every other version of every other life, she will always want to be here with her. The argument the film makes is that infinite possibility is meaningless without the chosen specific. That argument holds up better on the second viewing than on the first.

Get Out (2017)

Jordan Peele coined the term social thriller to describe the genre he had built around the Sunken Place, the black void Chris falls into as Catherine Keener stirs a teacup. The film cost $4.5 million to produce and grossed roughly $259.8 million worldwide, the most profitable picture of 2017 in net-profit terms. Peele won Best Original Screenplay at the 90th Academy Awards in March 2018, the first Black writer ever to do so. The film holds 98% on Rotten Tomatoes from 403 critics. A small set of horror traditionalists argued at release that the picture was not scary enough to qualify. The counter-argument has won the decade. The single tear running down Daniel Kaluuya’s face as he stares into the camera, suspended above the Sunken Place, is the image around which the film is built.

International Picks Worth the Subtitle Barrier

The cost of admission for the three films below is a willingness to read. Bong Joon-ho said at the 2020 Golden Globes that once a viewer crosses what he called the one-inch-tall barrier of subtitles, an enormous number of films open up. The point is plain and worth repeating.

In the Mood for Love (2000)

Wong Kar-wai’s picture ranked fifth on the BFI Sight and Sound 2022 critics’ poll, the highest-placed 21st-century film on a list otherwise dominated by Tokyo Story, Citizen Kane, Vertigo and Jeanne Dielman. The New York Times 2025 poll placed it fourth. Maggie Cheung wears more than 20 cheongsam dresses across the runtime, each keyed to a different emotional register, and Wong shot the film without a finished script over roughly 15 months in Hong Kong and Bangkok. The story is told through the absent halves of two marriages. The audience never sees the spouses who are cheating. In a March 2025 interview marking the film’s 25th anniversary, Wong asked if an algorithm could grasp the weight of a glance between two people. The line is the case for cinema like this, and against the recommendation engines that struggle to surface it.

Spirited Away (2001)

Chihiro sits on an empty train across a flooded sea, and Hayao Miyazaki holds the shot long enough that the viewer sits in the silence with her. The film began with the daughter of one of Miyazaki’s friends, a slightly bored ten-year-old who visited Studio Ghibli, and the director has said he wanted to make a film for that specific child rather than for the heroines Japanese animation usually accommodated. Spirited Away won Best Animated Feature at the 75th Academy Awards in March 2003, the first and so far only hand-drawn, non-English-language film to do so. It holds 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and 8.6 on IMDb, the highest rating of any animated film on the platform. It held the Japanese box-office record for nearly two decades, surpassed in 2020 by Demon Slayer: Mugen Train.

Past Lives (2023)

Celine Song shot the final farewell as a single take of six minutes and twenty-six seconds, with Greta Lee and Teo Yoo waiting in silence for a Manhattan Uber. As Nora walks back home weeping, the lighting changes, and the audience understands the tears are not for the man at the curb. They are for the twelve-year-old girl in Seoul she never properly mourned. The film is semi-autobiographical. Song emigrated from South Korea as a child, became a playwright in New York, and married an American writer, the model for the John Magaro character. The picture earned two Oscar nominations at the 96th Academy Awards in March 2024 and made Song the first Asian woman ever nominated for Best Original Screenplay.

Genre Films That Outgrew Their Genre

Genre pictures tend to have a shorter shelf life than dramas. These three were sold as genre films at release and outgrew the label almost immediately — none of them lean on the conventions they were marketed under.

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

George Miller conceived the film in 1987 and then spent 28 years failing to get it made. The project was delayed first by 9/11 insurance complications, then by Iraq War unrest at the planned Namibia location, then by Mel Gibson’s tabloid years, and then by a 2010 desert bloom that turned the Australian shooting locations into wildflower meadows. The production moved to Namibia. Miller was 70 when the picture was released. Steven Soderbergh’s reaction has become the most quoted line in the film’s lore, that he did not understand how the crew was not still shooting it and how hundreds of people were not dead. Fury Road won six Academy Awards at the 88th ceremony in February 2016, the most of any film that year, and earned a Best Picture nomination. The Doof Warrior, the blind albino guitarist on bungee cords spraying flame from his instrument at the front of a wall-of-amps war rig, is the image that announced the film to the world.

Children of Men (2006)

Alfonso Cuaron and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, friends since film school in Mexico, built the picture around a refusal of conventional coverage. The famous four-minute single-take ambush inside a moving car required 14 days of preparation, with each reset taking five hours. The longer refugee-camp battle, in which blood splatters onto the lens, was kept in the final cut because Lubezki argued the accident was the truer image. Children of Men grossed roughly $35 million domestically against a $76 million budget in 2006. Its critical stature has only grown since. The British Film Institute now calls it the anti-Blade Runner, a dystopia that does not look futuristic, but exactly like the world outside the window. The long-take aesthetic of modern action cinema descends directly from this film, with Sam Mendes referencing it openly on 1917.

The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

Frank Darabont bought the rights to Stephen King’s novella in 1987 for $5,000 in one of King’s well-known Dollar Babies arrangements, and he turned down a $2.5 million offer from Rob Reiner, who wanted to direct the film himself with Tom Cruise and Harrison Ford. The picture earned seven Oscar nominations and zero wins at the 67th Academy Awards in March 1995, and it lost approximately $9 million on a $25 million budget during its September 1994 theatrical run. Then the home-viewing audience discovered it. The film has held the number-one position on the IMDb Top 250 essentially without interruption since the early 2000s and now stands at 9.3. Morgan Freeman has blamed the title itself for the theatrical failure, the Shank, Sham, Shim problem. The image of Andy Dufresne raising his arms in the storm after the river escape has become a secular icon of American film.

How to Keep the Short List in Reach

The hardest part of curating cinema in 2026 has nothing to do with picking the films. It has to do with finding them once they are picked.

One Library, Every Service

Past Lives is the cleanest example of that problem. The film opened on Paramount+ in early 2024, moved off the platform months later, surfaced on Prime Video, and was picked up by Netflix after that. The household that tracks the title rather than the platform watches the film. The film opened on Paramount+ in early 2024, moved off the platform months later, surfaced on Prime Video, and was picked up by Netflix after that. The household that tracks the title rather than the platform watches the film. That’s the whole idea behind Plex: a social entertainment app for movie and TV lovers where you can stop app-hopping and search once across every streaming service you pay for, everything you own, and a free, ad-supported library of more than 50,000 movies and 600 live channels — no subscription required.

Watching Without a Phone in Your Lap

Denis Villeneuve banned cellphones on his Dune sets and described the theatrical version of his films as an act of presence. Christopher Nolan operates under the same rule. The nine films above reward an undivided two hours and punish a divided one. They survive a second viewing because the first registered the texture that the second then deepens. Putting the phone in another room is the only meaningful step a viewer can take after the picks are made.
