What is the Plex Media Server?
Plex Media Server is a software application that allows you to organize and stream your media collection from a central location. Think of it like having your own personal Netflix or Spotify server that you can access from various devices. It's a great tool for anyone who wants to streamline their media consumption and take control of their entertainment experience.
Is Plex really free?
It's totally free to download the Plex software, set up your server, and start streaming to any device on your local network. To stream remotely from any server you have access to, you’ll need a Remote Watch Pass or a Plex Pass.
Can I access my Plex library outside of my home network?
Yes, that's possible! First, you'll need to set up Remote Access on the Plex Media Server to facilitate remote connections. You then need either an active Plex Pass subscription on your server admin account (allowing any user accessing the server to stream remotely) or a Remote Watch Pass (letting you stream remotely from any server to which you have access).
Is Plex secure?
We understand the importance of security, and take all necessary steps to ensure a safe and secure platform for all our users. We use high-quality SSL certificates to encrypt the connection between your client device and server, ensuring that all your personal information and server details are fully private and protected, and information about the contents of your server are never EVER shared with Plex or any other third party.
How is the Remote Watch Pass different from a regular Plex Pass?
You could think of the Remote Watch Pass as just being a super specialized version of a regular, full Plex Pass:
Do I need a Plex Pass AND a Remote Watch Pass?
No. To stream personal content remotely from a Plex Media Server, you only need one of the following:
Can I buy a Remote Watch Pass for someone else?
We do not currently offer the ability to “gift” a Remote Watch Pass subscription to someone else; sorry. The subscription needs to be started directly on the desired account.
My mobile device can’t run/doesn’t have the newest Plex app. How can I stream remotely?
In the short term, nothing will change for users still running our old, previous mobile apps. They will still have a one-minute playback limitation when streaming personal content from a Plex Media Server (including both local and remote streaming). That limitation can be removed either by having an active Plex Pass subscription on your Plex account or via a one-time, in-app activation/unlock purchase. (A Remote Watch Pass will not affect usage of our old, previous mobile apps, only new apps.) See our existing mobile Android and iOS articles for details.
Do I need a Remote Watch Pass or a Plex Pass to access music and photo libraries remotely?
Subscription requirements for remote streaming of personal content from a Plex Media Server apply only to movies/TV/video media. This does not affect music or photo streaming to our dedicated Plexamp and Plex Photos apps.
What if I want to cancel renewal of my Remote Watch Pass or Plex Pass subscription?
You can cancel future renewal of a recurring subscription at any time. Go to your account Subscriptions page to make any changes to your subscription.
Can you explain the difference between the introductory and standard pricing?
For a limited time after we launch our new Remote Watch Pass, we’ll allow users to start that new subscription with special, introductory pricing. The introductory prices will allow you to “lock in” that lower price for an initial term of 12 months. For users who start their Remote Watch Pass subscription during the introductory period:
*Example prices in USD. Exact pricing in other currencies may vary. What if I’ve already paid the one-time mobile app activation fee?
For users who have already paid a one-time, in-app activation for either our mobile Android or iOS app, an extended trial for the new Remote Watch Pass subscription is available. To make use of it, you need to:
Can I upgrade from Remote Watch Pass to Plex Pass?
We expect to offer this ability broadly in the future, but at launch this will not be available. Users wishing to upgrade like this can cancel renewal of an existing Remote Watch Pass subscription, allow it to expire, and then start a new, full Plex Pass subscription.
What is Plex Pass?
Plex Pass is an optional subscription service, which provides additional features and benefits to pro subscribers who stream personal media files with Plex. It’s available as a recurring monthly or yearly plan, as well as a one-time lifetime payment. All the features and functionality of Plex Pass are the same regardless of subscription term (monthly/yearly/lifetime).
Does a Plex Pass give me access to new or premium movies or shows?
No, a Plex Pass subscription does NOT change or add “premium” items on our free, on-demand Movies & Shows streaming service, nor does it offer additional channels in our free Live TV programming. It also doesn’t grant access to download any of our free, ad-supported content.
Does a Plex Pass remove ads from free streaming?
No, a Plex Pass subscription does NOT remove ads from our ad-supported, on-demand, or Live TV programming. We do not currently offer a paid way to remove ads from those free services.
What if I want to cancel my subscription?
You can cancel future renewals at any time. Go to your account Subscriptions page to make any changes to your subscription. You can find more information about managing your Plex Pass subscription in this Plex Pass Subscription Management support article.
Do I need a Plex Pass if I am part of someone’s Plex Home?
Being in a Plex Home of someone with a Plex Pass only gives the user access to certain Plex Pass features in player apps. For instance, these include Remote Streaming, Skip Intro and Skip Credits, Rewind on Resume, and Pass Out Protection. For server-only features, like access to Plex Dash and Advanced Parental Controls, each server owner will need a Plex Pass.
